Glossary

Anonymous FTP
Allows visitors to upload and/or download predetermined files from designated directories without usernames or passwords. This is different from FTP Access.
Autoresponders
Sends an automated email response to incoming email sent to a specific address. One autoresponder can be configured per email address.
Bandwidth
The maximum amount of information passed over a connection in one second. We offer 3GB of bandwidth per month with each of our accounts and also allow you to increase this amount for an additional fee.
Bounce
What happens to an email when it is sent to an invalid address.
CGI
Common Gateway Interface.
CGI Script
Used to supplement basic HTML to make your website more interactive and functional. Our customers have free access to our library of CGI scripts. All of our hosting packages feature their own local CGI-BIN that stores and executes custom CGI scripts.
Client/Server
Describes the relationship between two different computers. One computer, the client, requests information from another computer, the server. The server gives, the client takes.
Disk Space
Used to store everything related to your website such as your regular HTML files, images, multimedia files, anonymous FTP files, POP mail messages, CGI scripts and any other files that make up your website.
Domain Name
Basically an easy to remember internet address in plain alphabet which computers will translate into an ugly IP address. As an example, our domain name is webanet.co.uk.
Domain Name System (DNS)
Every server on the internet can be identified by its IP address, these consist of a series of digits, e.g. 195.182.176.1. It isn't easy to remember a series of digits for each web site you want to visit, so the Domain Name System was created. This maps a friendly name (the domain name) to the IP address.
Email Forwarding
Allows emails sent to a certain address to be forwarded to another address of your choice. For example, you are out of the office and wish office emails to be forwarded to a personal account.
Encryption
A way of scrambling data so only the intended recipient can decipher it.
Firewall
A security set-up that prevents unauthorised users gaining entry to a private network.
Front Page extensions
In order for you to use all the features that come with your Microsoft Front Page editor, Front Page Extensions should be installed for your account.
FTP
File Transfer Protocol (FTP) is a fast way of uploading and downloading files from the internet. We recommend WS_FTP or CuteFTP.
Gateway
A computer that controls access to the Internet. You'll go through a gateway computer to get to the net.
HCP
HCP - Hosting Control Panel - A system written by Webanet to allow you to control and administer your hosting account.
Hit
A measure of a visit to a web page. When someone visits a web page that page has received one hit.
HTML
Hypertext Markup Language (HTML) is the code from which every web page is made. Your web browser reads the HTML and then presents the page on your screen.
HTTP
The protocol used by browsers to download web pages from web servers.
IP Address
The unique location of a web page on the internet (e.g. 132.112.98.22).
Java
A powerful web page programming language.
Javascript/JScript
A relatively simple programming language that enables you to do relatively advanced things on web pages.
MIME
Multiple Internet Mail Extensions. This is a standard way of enclosing email attachments so that the users of different email programs can still send each other files without encountering problems.
MySQL
MySQL is a relational database engine used for creating online databases. We have support for creating simple searchable databases and more complex database-website interfaces. More information on MySQL can be found at www.mysql.com.
PHP
PHP is a server-side HTML-embedded scripting language used to create dynamic web pages. We mainly use PHP as the mechanism to interrogate MySQL databases. More information on PHP can be found at www.php.net.
PGP
Pretty Good Privacy. This is one popular way of encrypting messages.
POP
Post Office Protocol. This is the protocol used by your email program to retrieve messages from the server.
POP account
This is where you download your email from. A pop account is not necessarily the same as an email address. So your email address may be info@yourdomain.com and the pop account may be 'fred'.
RealAudio
Real Networks' RealAudio is client-server based, meaning both the browser and the server must have RealAudio components installed for it to work. You can create and deliver audio-based streaming multimedia content through the Internet to audiences' worldwide. We include step-by-step instructions for including RealAudio in your Web pages at request.
Router
A computer that redirects data.
Secure Server (SSL)
One method of ensuring that information entered through your website is protected from prying eyes. Information submitted via a secure form is sent to the server in an encrypted mode. Most commonly used for credit card transactions.
Server
A computer that provides information to other computers. Your web site is stored on our web servers.
Shopping cart
Keeps track of what your customers have ordered on-line as they add and remove items from their virtual shopping cart. When the customer is ready to check out, the program tallies the order for your customers to review. If the customer decides to submit the order, the program will email the order information to the email address of your choice and also send a receipt to the customer. Webanet offers completely customisable shopping cart and ordering systems as part of our e-business solutions.
Spam
Sending large quantities of unsolicited e-mail. Webanet does not allow customers to spam.
Telnet
A protocol that enables you to make a remote connection to a computer.
